GETTING THE PROPER AMOUNT OF REST is essential to our overall well being. For most people, this means achieving at least 7 hours of sleep. But for too many, this goal can feel impossible to achieve–somewhere around 50% of American adults are sleep deprived. When you’re feeling drained, your mood and focus is affected, which in turn can lead to a domino effect that creates the perfect recipe for a miserable day, or month, if you find yourself constantly battling drooping eyelids.
So what would you give for evenjust one good night’s rest?
CBD may just be the natural relief you’ve been looking for.
And what would you get in return? More productivity at work, and less time tossing and turning? More time spent with loved ones, because normally you just don’t have the energy? Feeling like you have a new lease on life because youfinallygot some long-needed sleep?
Fortunately, there is hope in the quest for a peaceful sleep through the night. Hemp research is growing in its discoveries, mounting to an ever-growing list of helpful attributes and glowing user testimonials. Here’s what you need to know.
GET READY TO SAY GOODBYE TO COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF CAFFEINE because the science is here to demonstrate why CBD, or cannabidiol, can be so great for sleep. You might be used to drinking cup after cup of your favorite iced coffee to get you through your day, but caffeine is a stimulant drug that is habit-forming. On the other hand, CBD is reported to be non-habit forming and actually “may also help lessen cravings for alcohol, cannabis, opiates, and stimulants”, according to Harvard University. Harvard also backs the relationship between CBD and sleep, noting that the hemp-derived product can help people fall asleep and stay asleep (by comparison, the popular melatonin only helps in falling asleep, not staying asleep).
There are numerous studies pointing to the benefits of CBD and sleep. One suchstudy from the University of Colorado saw over two thirds of participants report improvement in their sleep habits thanks to taking CBD. In some participants, researchers saw a decrease in the level of cortisol–more commonly known as the stress hormone– in the brain. With CBD minimizing the effects of stress and pain, it becomes more possible to enjoy a restful sleep.
Another study, this time from the University of New Mexico, also suggests that CBD can improve sleep quality. In this study, 409 participants with insomnia rated their symptoms of insomnia on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most severe. On average, most participants began with a 6.6 rating. After the study was complete, those same participants rated their symptoms at an average of 2.2, a reduction of -4.5 points. Effectively, these participants saw their insomnia symptoms reduce by over half!
It is important to note with this study that the participants used the flower form instead of an oil, which may contain more cannabinoids than typical CBD.
CBD has shown to be effective even in smaller situations. In the case of a 10-year-old girl with post-traumatic-stress disorder (PTSD) and concurring sleep problems, she began a CBD oil regiment with consent from her grandmother, her legal guardian. The girl had experienced poor, interrupted sleep quality for a number of years, and she was unable to sleep by herself even when doctors prescribed her medications and melatonin. Unfortunately, her performance and behavior at school suffered as a result.
And so she began a CBD trial, taking her prescribed dose every night before bed for five months. The patient and her family reported that she was sleeping better and on her own most nights, and she was now handling her school year well. Best of all, no side effects were observed.
CBD works by attaching to cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 in our brain. Our body’s natural endocannabinoid system is thought to play a significant part in maintaining our overall health as it is closely linked to our central nervous system, and therefore, it can critically impact our sleep/wake cycle.
While many may benefit from CBD right away, it can often take sustained use (1-2 weeks) of CBD therapy before you may notice its effects. If you have not noticed any benefit, you may want to consider adjusting the time you take it or increasing your dose strength.
To take CBD for sleep, dispense your CBD Oil dose sublingually under the tongue for at least 30 seconds. It’s usually best to take it 30 minutes to an hour before sleep, but this can be different for everyone. Alternatively, many users enjoy adding it to their nightly tea before bed.
