What is it and how can it help me?

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.

Between all the commercials and celebrities, it certainly seems like everyone experiences anxiety to different degrees. But what is anxiety exactly, and what can people do to help relieve overwhelming sensations?

The definition of anxiety according to the National Library of Medicine is “a feeling of fear, dread and uneasiness”. It may bring about restlessness, increased heart rate, sweating and you may feel physically tense. However, everyone experiences anxiety differently, and it’s important to listen to your body and recognize your own signs and symptoms.

WHAT ARE COMMON SYMPTOMS?

  • Quickened breathing
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Insomnia and restlessness
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Feeling physically tense
  • Physical weakness and lethargy
  • Trouble concentrating on anything other than the present worry

HOW DOES CBD AFFECT ANXIETY?

CBD, or cannabidiol, works by affecting the cannabinoid receptors, which is a part of the human body’s existing endocannabinoid system. Never heard of it? This complex bodily system was named for the plant that helped scientists discover this important system, which plays a significant role in maintaining your body’s natural health and stability, also commonly referred to as homeostasis. There are two key receptors for CBD in the endocannabinoid system:

CB1 RECEPTORS are present throughout the body, particularly in the brain. They coordinate essential functions such as movement, pain, emotion, mood, thinking, appetite, memories, and more!

CB2 RECEPTORS affect inflammation and pain as they are more commonly found in the immune system.

ARE THE BENEFITS BACKED BY SCIENCE?

The more we learn about CBD, the more we discover its potential benefits. In 2015, a group of scientists from the New York University of Medicine submitted their encouraging conclusions to the National Institute of Health in an article titled, Cannabidiol as a Potential Treatment for Anxiety Disorders. The researchers sought to find how consistent use of broad-spectrum CBD impacts the treatment of humans with chronic symptoms of anxiety. They utilized a range of environments from which they formed their assessments: from preclinical, human experimental, clinical, and epidemiological studies, they evaluated the evidence and determined that CBD has “considerable potential”.Why? The New York University medical researchers saw that CBD “demonstrat[ed] … efficacy in reducing anxiety behaviors” with “minimal sedative effects and an excellent safety profile”.

Yet another study by the University of Colorado continues to provide more evidence towards the helpfulness of using CBD. In their study, an incredible 79.2% of participants reported a decrease in anxiety in the first month and remained decreased throughout the course of the study. The participants using CBD also saw an improvement in sleep. Science-backed studies on CBD like this emphasize the importance of learning more about this special, naturally found compound.

IS TAKING CBD FOR ANXIETY RIGHT FOR ME?

You must be wondering if CBD is the ideal solution for your anxiety. Ultimately, it’s up to you, and ideally a doctor specializing in hemp-based dosing administration, whether CBD is a safe treatment. The same way everyone experiences anxiety differently, the same goes for how each person reacts to taking CBD. Therefore, it is always our recommendation that you speak to your doctor before taking CBD.
